Veteran Stories. A soldier remembers Batalik.
The Batalik sub-sector saw some of the longest and most isolated fighting of the war. There were no roads to the fighting. Everything we needed was carried up on the backs of men.
We cleared ridge after ridge in the thin air of the high Himalaya. You learned to measure progress in metres of rock, and to remember the name of every feature, because each one had cost something.
The cold was constant. The nights were long. But the men beside me never wavered, and that is what I carry with me still.
Thank you for letting me share this story.
