Behind every name on the Roll of Honour is a family. He wrote to us often, and always cheerfully. Never about the danger, only about the men he served with.
His letters spoke of the mountains, of the cold, and of small kindnesses between soldiers. He asked about home, about the garden, about everything ordinary that he missed.
The last letter arrived after the news did. We keep it still, and we read it every year on Vijay Diwas. It is how we keep him near.
