War Story
Batalik Sector
The Toughest Forgotten Front
The Batalik sector was one of the toughest and most complex fronts of the Kargil War. Unlike the more visible heights of Dras, Batalik consisted of broken ridgelines, narrow valleys and remote approaches. The terrain was harsh, the routes were difficult, and the enemy had occupied positions around important features such as Jubar, Khalubar, Kukarthang and Point 5203. From these positions, the enemy threatened movement and tried to extend pressure towards the Leh–Batalik–Kargil road.
The fighting in Batalik required a different kind of endurance. Troops often had to operate across isolated features where movement was slow and support was difficult. The enemy had the advantage of height and prepared sangars. Indian soldiers had to climb through fire, survive in extreme weather and clear positions at close range. Every captured ridge opened the way to another, and every advance demanded new sacrifice.
Several units played crucial roles in this sector. 12 Jammu & Kashmir Light Infantry fought in the Point 5203 and Point 4812 areas. 1/11 Gorkha Rifles became immortal through the battle of Khalubar. 17 Garhwal Rifles fought in the Jubar–Kukarthang area. The Ladakh Scouts, with their knowledge of local terrain and high-altitude warfare, became vital in Chorbatla and adjoining areas.
The Batalik sector produced some of the most powerful names of Operation Vijay: Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey, who charged at Khalubar and earned the Param Vir Chakra; Captain Keishing Clifford Nongrum, who fought at Point 4812 and was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra; and Major Sonam Wangchuk, whose leadership with the Ladakh Scouts earned him the Maha Vir Chakra. The Final English script highlights Batalik and Sub-Sector Haneef as areas where Indian soldiers wrote many brave stories, and mentions Captain Manoj Pandey, Major Sonam Wangchuk and Captain Haneef Uddin as heroes of these battles.
Batalik should be narrated as the “toughest forgotten front” because it carried the same courage and sacrifice as the famous Dras battles, but across a wider, harsher and less easily understood landscape.
