War Story

Battle of Point 5203

The Battle of Persistence

Point 5203 was one of the difficult objectives in the Batalik sector. The enemy had occupied the height and built defensive positions to stop the Indian advance. From above, they could observe the approaches, direct fire and launch counterattacks. For the Indian soldiers, the problem was not only reaching the feature; it was holding every small gain once it had been achieved.

The task involved 12 Jammu & Kashmir Light Infantry, supported by elements of the Para Regiment. The advance began under heavy enemy fire. Soldiers moved over broken and exposed ground, carrying ammunition and weapons while the enemy fired from prepared positions. The first foothold was won through courage, but in mountain warfare, a foothold is only the beginning. The enemy counterattacked repeatedly, trying to push Indian troops back before they could consolidate.

This is why Point 5203 must be narrated as the Battle of Persistence. It was not won by one dramatic moment alone. It was won by soldiers who refused to give up ground once captured. They held on under fire, reorganized, repelled counterattacks and then pushed forward again. The battle demanded stamina, discipline and faith in the mission.

The names of Captain B.M. Cariappa and Lance Naik Ghulam Mohammad Khan are associated with bravery in this sector. Their actions represent the spirit of the soldiers who fought here: determined, aggressive and unwilling to step back even when the enemy pressed hard.

Point 5203 also helps explain the larger Batalik campaign. The sector was full of such objectives—each one dangerous, each one necessary. Visitors should understand that the Kargil victory was not built only around famous names like Tiger Hill and Batra Top. It was also built on features like Point 5203, where men fought in difficult terrain, away from the spotlight, and turned small gains into permanent victories.
