War Story

Three Pimples and Area Knoll

Young Officers, Impossible Heights

After Tololing and the adjoining features had begun to fall, the battle in the Dras sector moved towards another cruel test of courage — the Three Pimples complex and Area Knoll. These were not gentle slopes or simple hill features. They were sharp, broken, rocky heights that formed part of the enemy’s defensive system in the Dras sector. From these positions, the enemy could continue to threaten Indian movement and resist the advance towards other objectives. The mountain gave them protection; the height gave them observation; and their bunkers gave them confidence.

For the Indian soldier, the only way to break this confidence was to climb. Every assaulting man had to move through exposed ground, with the enemy firing from above. There was little cover, and the darkness of night could hide movement only for a while. As the troops came closer, they had to fight bunker by bunker, sangar by sangar. At such heights, the battle became extremely personal. Artillery could weaken the enemy, but the final victory still had to be won by infantrymen closing in with rifles, grenades and raw courage.

The task was taken up by 2 Rajputana Rifles, a unit already deeply connected with the fierce battles around Tololing. Major Padmapani Acharya emerged as one of the central figures of this action. He led his men from the front, knowing fully that the approach was deadly. The QR Audio Gateway script records that Major Padmapani Acharya spearheaded the assault on Three Pimples in the Dras sector and sustained fatal injuries during the operation; for his exemplary courage, he was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra.

Major Acharya’s leadership was not only tactical; it was emotional. In battle, soldiers look to the man ahead of them. When the officer moves forward, the men find strength to follow. Even when wounded, Major Acharya’s determination continued to inspire the assault. His sacrifice became part of the spirit of 2 Rajputana Rifles and part of the larger memory of Kargil.

This battle is also connected with Captain Vijayant Thapar, whose courage during the assault on Area Knoll is remembered at the memorial’s Helipad. The QR script states that the helipad is dedicated to Captain Vijayant Thapar of 2 Rajputana Rifles, who led his men with fiery determination in the assault on Area Knoll in Dras and laid down his life after achieving victory; he was posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra. The Helipad therefore is not just a landing ground in the memorial. It is a place where visitors must remember the young officer whose battlefield story gives the location its soul.

The story of Three Pimples and Area Knoll is a story of young officers and impossible heights. It reminds us that Kargil was not won by one famous battle alone. It was won through many sharp, punishing objectives where soldiers had to climb into direct enemy fire. Each bunker cleared, each rock crossed, and each ridge taken came at a human cost. In this story, the visitor should feel the courage of men who knew the danger, yet moved forward because the mission demanded it.
