War Story

Chorbat La

Ladakh Scouts, Warriors of Ice and Stone

Chorbat La was a battlefield where local knowledge, mountain instinct and courage became decisive. The terrain was harsh, cold and unforgiving. The heights demanded soldiers who could move through rock, snow and thin air with confidence. In this environment, the Ladakh Scouts became one of the most valuable forces of Operation Vijay.

The Ladakh Scouts were not merely operating in the mountains; they belonged to the mountains. Their understanding of the terrain, weather and high-altitude movement gave them a unique strength. Under the leadership of Major Sonam Wangchuk, they undertook bold actions in the Chorbatla sector. They established observation posts, identified enemy movement and struck enemy positions with precision.

The QR script calls the Ladakh Scouts “warriors of ice and stone” and specifically mentions their fearless charge in the Chorbatla sector under Major Sonam Wangchuk, whose courage earned him the Maha Vir Chakra. The Final English script also records that the brave soldiers of Ladakh Scouts drove away the enemy from Chorbatla sector.

This story should be narrated differently from the large frontal assaults of Dras. Chorbat La is a story of stealth, observation, mountain craft and local bravery. It shows how high-altitude warfare depends not only on firepower, but also on the ability to understand the land. A wrong step, a wrong route or a wrong judgment in such terrain could cost lives. The Ladakh Scouts moved with confidence where others might hesitate.

Major Sonam Wangchuk’s leadership represents the deep bond between soldier and terrain. His men fought not only for a military objective, but for the defence of their own region. Chorbat La should therefore be remembered as a battle where the mountains were defended by sons of the mountains.
