War Story

Khalubar Ridge

Captain Manoj Pandey’s Immortal Charge

Khalubar Ridge was one of the most dramatic and heroic battlefields of the Batalik sector. The ridge was sharp, difficult and heavily defended. The enemy had occupied strong positions and built bunkers that dominated the approaches. For the Indian Army, Khalubar had to be captured to break enemy control in the sector. For the soldiers tasked with the assault, the mission meant climbing into fire.

The men of 1/11 Gorkha Rifles advanced with the courage and fighting spirit for which the Gorkhas are known. Among them was Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey, a young officer whose bravery would become one of the most powerful legends of Operation Vijay. He led from the front, moving ahead of his men and engaging enemy positions directly. The battle was not fought from a distance. It was fought bunker by bunker, with rifles, grenades and close combat.

Captain Pandey’s leadership was immediate and fearless. He identified enemy positions, moved towards them and silenced resistance so that his men could continue the advance. Even after being wounded, he refused to stop. His determination gave strength to those around him. The QR Audio Gateway script remembers him on Vijay Path as the officer who led the charge up Khalubar Top in Batalik Sector and made the supreme sacrifice.

His words, remembered with reverence, reflect the spirit of a soldier who placed mission and honour above fear. He was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra. The Final English script also identifies him as one of the heroes of the Batalik and Sub-Sector Haneef battles.

Khalubar Ridge should be narrated not only as a tactical victory, but as a story of leadership that became immortal. Every visitor should feel that Captain Manoj Pandey did not simply command an assault—he became the force that carried it forward. His sacrifice turned Khalubar into sacred ground.
