Zojila War Memorial

The Zojila War Memorial stands as an iron-clad reminder of one of the most decisive battles of the Jammu & Kashmir campaign (1947–1949)—Operation Bison. This was no ordinary victory, no ordinary war. It was a battle fought not only against a well-entrenched enemy of Pakistani regulars and raiders, but against time, against terrain, against the very odds of possibility. On 1st November 1948, history was rewritten when the 7th Light Cavalry defied the limits of military strategy by inducting and operating M5 Stuart Light Tanks at an altitude of 11,578 feet—a feat never before attempted. Against every expectation, these tanks rumbled through the treacherous mountain passes of Zojila, their steel treads shattering enemy defenses and sealing an unprecedented triumph. This memorial is not just a tribute—it is a lesson in grit, in strategy, and in the audacity to attempt the impossible. It stands as a reminder that in the face of adversity, the Indian soldier does not retreat, does not surrender—he overcomes.
