War Story

Pimple 2

Captain Anuj Nayyar’s Last Command

Pimple 2 was part of the bitter fighting in the Mushkoh sector, where the enemy had built strong defensive positions on broken mountain ground. The feature was difficult to approach and dangerous to assault. The enemy’s bunkers were arranged to cover the routes of advance, and the soldiers moving uphill had to cross exposed ground under machine-gun fire and artillery threat.

During the assault, the company commander was injured. In that critical moment, Captain Anuj Nayyar of 17 Jat Regiment took over command. There was no time for hesitation. In mountain warfare, if momentum is lost, the enemy gets time to reorganize, reinforce and fire down upon the attackers. Captain Nayyar understood this and immediately took charge of the situation. He reorganized the men, pushed the assault forward and personally led the attack on enemy positions.

The fighting became close and intense. Captain Nayyar used a rocket launcher to destroy enemy bunkers and continued moving forward, even though the enemy resistance remained strong. His courage gave confidence to the troops around him. He was not merely issuing orders; he was leading by example, standing in the same fire as his men.

As the assault progressed, an enemy RPG struck him. He fell before he could see the full result of his actions, but his leadership had already changed the battle. For his conspicuous courage and supreme sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra. The QR Audio Gateway script specifically remembers him on Vijay Path as the officer who took command during the attack on Pimple 2 in Mushkoh sector, destroyed enemy positions with a rocket launcher and fell to an enemy RPG.

This is a story of command under fire. It tells visitors that leadership in Kargil was not about rank alone. It was about stepping forward when the battle demanded it, accepting danger personally, and ensuring that the mission continued even at the cost of life.
