War Story
Point 4875 / Batra Top
Where Courage Became a Name
Point 4875 was one of the most important and fiercely contested heights in the Mushkoh Valley. To the enemy, it was a dominating position from where they could observe and support operations across the valley. To the Indian Army, it was a peak that had to be taken back, whatever the cost. The approaches were narrow, steep and exposed. The enemy had prepared strong positions, and every movement towards the objective could be met with deadly fire.
The soldiers of 13 Jammu & Kashmir Rifles advanced with the determination that had already become the hallmark of Operation Vijay. Among them was Captain Vikram Batra, who had earlier become famous after the capture of Point 5140. But for him, victory at one peak was not enough. The mission continued, and so did his courage. At Point 4875, the battle became close and violent. Enemy bunkers had to be reached and cleared at short range. In such a battle, leadership could not remain behind; it had to move ahead.
Captain Batra led from the front. In the heat of battle, he moved forward to support his men and take the fight directly to the enemy. His courage inspired the soldiers around him, but the battle demanded the highest price. He made the supreme sacrifice, and his name became inseparable from the height. Point 4875 was later remembered as Batra Top, transforming a military map reference into a sacred name of courage.
Another immortal act of bravery came from Rifleman Sanjay Kumar of the same unit. Despite being wounded, he charged enemy positions, seized an enemy weapon and turned it against them. His action helped break enemy resistance and earned him the Param Vir Chakra. In the wider Mushkoh sector, Captain Anuj Nayyar of 17 Jat also displayed extraordinary courage at Pimple 2.
Point 4875 is therefore not just a story of one assault. It is the story of a mountain renamed by sacrifice. It tells visitors that in Kargil, numbers on maps became names in national memory. The QR script mentions Point 4875 as Batra Top in honour of Captain Vikram Batra and records the role of 13 JAK Rifles, 17 Jat and 2 Naga in the offensive on this feature.
